Passing numerous variables to a new mode: I call up a transaction in a new SAP GUI mode with a /O... command and start an InputScript passing a couple of variables with USING. This works fine, but I now need to pass a large and variable number of strings, which I apparently cannot do with USING. What can I do?

Write all variables into a long text variable, using CopyText ... -appendline statements. Then copy the whole long text into a "shared" text using the "-toSharedText=" option of the CopyText command. In the InputScript that you have opened in the new mode you can now access the shared text and read your variables.
